Overlay Systems
Kentucky may be fondly nicknamed as the “Bluegrass State” but landscaping can never be complete and can never be as impressive with softscape only. Hardscaping must be included. Among the most popular methods of adding beauty to any hardscape is the use and application of overlay systems.
There are many reasons why a Kentucky household would want one of our overlay systems. It could be to repair and hide the normal wear and tear on the current concrete. It can also be to improve the look of the surface without too much time and money spent for changing the existing surface.
Whatever the reason is, overlay systems will always provide the same benefits like durability, easy adaptation, resistance to cracking and harsh weather, lightweight, and easy application that can never be found in other hardscaping techniques. These benefits can be a lot more beneficial depending on the kind of overlay systems that will be applied.
Choosing the Right Overlay Systems for your Hardscape
Different kinds of overlay systems produce different decorative outputs and performance attributes. So it is important to keep your hardscaping purpose in mind when choosing among these overlay systems:
- Microtoppings. Also called as skin toppings, this overlay system is only about 1/8 of an inch and can provide that silky or textured finish. This may be overlaid on any concrete surface, be it on the floor or the wall.
- Spray-down. This overlay system is applied as a splatter coat and can be used with paper or plastic stencils. Spray-down overlay is also 1/8 of an inch but compared to microtoppings, it is more durable and can perfectly fit for pool decks, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Stamped. Mimicking bricks, natural stones, slates, and others is possible with stamping and texturing involved in stampable overlay system. Its thickness ranges from ¼ to 1/3 of an inch, just enough to allow texture creations and cover little imperfections on a concrete surface.
- Self-leveling. Since it can be up to an inch thick, self-leveling is the better choice as a canvass for engraving and self-cutting. This system is also more popular for restoring worn-out decorated concrete and for leveling uneven concrete surfaces.
- Underlayments. This overlay system is not actually used for decorative purpose but is instead used to cover up and restore worn-out but still durable concrete surfaces. It is also applied in preparation for applying other overlay systems.
The thicker the overlays, the better they can be for making deeper and more realistic textures. They are more durable also against wear and tear and can standout better from possible flaws. But then, the surface that your Kentucky home already has will be considered when recommending which among these overlay systems will be perfect.
